Hill District homicide suspect arrested in Arizona

PITTSBURGH — A man wanted for shooting and killing a man and wounding a woman in the Hill District was arrested by federal marshals Wednesday in Tucson, Ariz.

Jarrell Anthony Liddell, 33, was charged with homicide and related crimes for the Jan. 16, 2011, slaying of Ronald Edward Washington, 24, of the East End, who was gunned down while sitting in a vehicle in the 200 block of Lombard Street.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force received information that Liddell was hiding in Arizona and using his brother's identity, according to Michael Baughman, the chief deputy U.S. marshal in Pittsburgh.

Federal marshals in Tucson arrested Liddell as he was leaving a gas station, Baughman said.

Pittsburgh police said Washington and several other people were sitting in a car following a late-night party and talking to two men. An argument broke out and Liddell began shooting, police said.

The driver sped away before realizing that someone had been shot. He drove to UPMC Mercy, where Washington died of gunshot wounds in the chest and neck.

Chanelle Hopkins, then 20, of the North Side, was wounded.

Liddell, who previously was convicted of robbing a business, also was wanted by the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole for a violation, Baughman said.
