Landslide in West End damages business, shuts down train track

PITTSBURGH — Crews worked to clear a landslide in Pittsburgh's West End early Friday morning.

Officials said a boulder the size of a car slammed into a Jackson Welding Supply and debris covered nearby railroad tracks on West Carson Street.

The business owner said one guard was inside the building at the time of the landslide, but he was not hurt.

"A rock hit the building and put a hole in the wall and just did sheet metal damage. That is about it. But it did come close to some other things," said Jackson Welding Supply owner Michael Mazziotti.

An engineer from the city of Pittsburgh must determine if the building is safe to open for business.

One Norfolk Southern track remained opened while crews worked to clear a second track. Officials from Norfolk Southern said the other track should reopen sometime Friday morning.
