‘Burner phone’ garage door scam costs local homeowner $11k

Jeanne Stelmak didn’t think much about her garage door issue when she noticed they were struggling to open. It had been a while since they were installed, and she already knew who she wanted to call: Ted Moreau, the man who put them in.

Stelmak did what most consumers do: she went online, searched for Moreau’s number and called in a service request.

The man who came to her house wasn’t Ted. She thought Ted hired an employee.

“He gave me a price that just about floored me,” Stelmak recalled. “But I thought, ‘Wow, you know, I trust Ted.’”

It turned out the man who told Stelmak her new door opener and springs would cost $11,000 had no connection to Ted. Somehow, Stelmak had called a phone number investigators traced to a burner phone run by scammers based in the Philippines. They communicated with Stelmak and invoiced her through an email, using the company “Master Garage Door OH.”

It’s not clear who actually came to Stelmak’s house to do the work, but they weren’t very good. The real Ted Moreau pointed out several basic issues when he later returned from vacation and found Stelmak at his door.

Exposed wires, misaligned parts and unnecessary equipment. The $850 springs Stelmak paid for weren’t hooked up to anything.

Moreau said the $11,000 job should’ve cost $2,200.

“I could probably put these doors in twice for that same money we’re still going out for lunch at the steakhouse,” Moreau said.

Records with The Better Business Bureau show another complaint was filed around the same time Stelmak called Master Garage Door OH. A homeowner in Florida said they were scammed out of $2,000.

Stelmak was fortunate. She successfully appealed the charges to her bank and credit card, which refunded her the money.

“Normally, I would get a couple quotes. I would talk to people, but I thought I was working with a reputable person,” she said.

Attempts to reach Master Garage Door OH were not successful.
