Man in custody after shootout with police in Homewood

PITTSBURGH — A man is in custody after a shootout with police Friday morning.

Police responded to multiple ShotSpotter alerts and a call from a Pennsylvania state constable for shots fired in the 7200 block of Kelly Street in Homewood at 2:40 a.m.

Officers talked to a witness at the scene who saw a person firing shots.

Police said they found the suspect, 36-year-old Michael Tyrol Waller, at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Nadir Way at 2:45 a.m. A statement from Allegheny County said that Waller began shooting at officers as he attempted to flee and a police officer returned fire. Eventually, the gunshots ceased and Waller surrendered on North Lang Avenue. Authorities say that Waller discarded two pistols while he surrendered.

Medics assessed the scene and determined that neither Waller nor officers were wounded during the shootout.

Detectives said that Waller was not permitted to own a firearm and believe that one of the two handguns had been reported stolen from Jefferson Hills in December 2019.

Waller is currently being held at the Allegheny County Jail and will face charges of criminal attempt homicide, aggravated assault, receiving stolen property and firearm related offenses. He is currently awaiting arraignment.
