Amend is accused of shooting his estranged girlfriend, Tina Thornton, multiple times Saturday morning after forcing his way into an apartment in Pittsburgh's Crafton Heights neighborhood, according to state police.
Thornton’s adult daughter, who lives at the apartment, told police that her mother and Amend began to “tussle.” Amend pulled out a gun and aimed it at Thornton’s head, then at his own and again at Thornton’s.
According to a criminal complaint, Thornton’s daughter said Amend pulled the trigger and missed, but then fired two more shots, hitting her mother.
After fleeing, Amend led officers on a chase into Oakland Township, authorities said. Police used spike strips in an attempt to stop him, but Amend ditched his vehicle near a trailer park and ran, police said.
A SWAT team was called around 2 p.m. Saturday to aid in the search, which was focused in a wooded area surrounding the trailer park, near Oakland Township Elementary School.
Residents had reported sightings of Amend in the area, but none of those led to an arrest.
Charges filed against Amend include criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person.
Thornton, meanwhile, remains hospitalized. Family members told Channel 11 that as recently as Friday morning, one of her lungs had collapsed.
