Massive superload trucks to travel through 3 Western Pennsylvania counties; traffic delays expected

Superload successfully makes tricky turn in Leechburg

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is warning drivers to prepare for traffic delays as massive superloads travel through Armstrong, Westmoreland and Indiana counties.

Edwards Moving and Rigging of Shelbyville, Ky., is transporting the equipment from Schenley, Pa., to the Homer City Power Plant.

The superloads will occupy two traffic lanes while traveling at speeds between 10 and 25 mph. Transports will be accompanied by escort vehicles, Pennsylvania State Police and bucket trucks staged to raise overhead utility wires along the route.

On Sept. 29 at 9 a.m., the transport is scheduled to leave the Armstrong Terminal in Schenley. The load will travel along Route 66 through Leechburg and Apollo to Delmont before moving onto Route 22. It will proceed to the Westmoreland and Indiana county line toward Blairsville, where it will pull off at a staging area to equip additional machinery.

Travel will resume at 7 p.m. along Route 22 and Route 119. Drivers traveling west of the Indiana County line will encounter a detour using Bairdstown Road and West Market Street to East Market Street and Old William Penn Highway to reach the Route 22/119 interchange. Motorists traveling east of the county line will face a rolling slowdown on Route 22 East while the superload crosses the Conemaugh River bridge.

On Sept. 30, the trip will resume at 9 a.m., moving onto Campbells Mill Road (Route 3011) and Blacklick Road (Route 3013) toward the Homer City Power Plant. Passenger vehicles and trucks will be detoured at the Route 119 intersection with Campbells Mill Road, heading south to Route 22 West, north on Route 217 and back to Blacklick Road.

PennDOT listed additional tentative travel dates for Oct. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15 and 16. These dates are subject to change based on weather conditions or operational delays. Single-day trips will also move periodically along the route, causing temporary slowdowns without full road closures.

PennDOT announced that specific travel times, routes and detours for future superload trips will be published prior to approved transportation dates.
