“We were concerned a child wandering the street by herself almost got hit by a car. It took neighbors to come out and bring the child in out of the cold,” McDonald Police Officer Mike Dhanse said.
McDonald police said they had already been searching for the girl after a family friend reported the 3-year-old missing.
The girl’s parents, Teresa Cook and Mark Crowell, are now facing charges for endangering the welfare of children.
“The child didn't have shoes or sock. She was shivering and her nose running,” Dhanse said. “We believe a half hour went by before they actually called police and reported the child missing.”
Cook spoke with Channel 11 News Wednesday, saying she was getting dinner ready and just didn’t realize the girl had gotten out of the house.
“I was so scared. I thought I lost my baby, so please keep an eye on your kids,” Cook said. “Please keep an eye on your 3-year-old kids. It can happen so fast.”
Authorities said the couple knew the girl liked to walk out the front door but didn’t lock or close it.
“I'm making sure the door is locked and getting baby gates,” Cook said.
