MCKEESPORT, Pa. — McKeesport police said rumors about a “purge” are unfounded, and the person responsible for posting such information on social media is under investigation.
Rumors began circulating via social media on Monday afternoon into Tuesday.
This article was written by Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLIVE.
The “purge” is a possible reference to a movie by the same name or its sequel, “The Purge: Anarchy,” which was released recently.
In the films, the “purge” refers to one day a year of absolute lawlessness.
McKeesport Police Department responded to the rumors via its Facebook page on Tuesday evening.
“There is no credible threat to the community regarding this posting, nor is there any reason to be concerned,” the police post reads. “This attention is an example of the exaggeration involving social media posts ... it is deemed not to be a threat of any value.”
Anyone with information regarding the purge posts can contact McKeesport police at 412-675-5015.
