Meteor shower to pass over Pittsburgh

Astronomy aficionados get ready! The Perseid meteor show is expected to light up the sky Saturday night.

Astronomers said stargazers may see up to 60 meteors an hour during the celestial show.

The peak activity of the shower will occur from Saturday at 10 p.m. until dawn on Sunday.

Although meteors, or shooting stars, are visible on most cloudless nights, astronomers said several times a year the Perseid meteor show appears when Earth passes near or through the remaining dust and rock fragments of a dead comet, as it continues to circle the Sun.
