Mike McCarthy makes major change to longstanding Steelers practice

Rather than having season-long captains, the Pittsburgh Steelers will take on a different look in that aspect with Mike McCarthy now in charge.

“We’ll do the weekly captain format,” McCarthy said during Monday’s press conference. “So without getting ahead of myself here, once we get to that point of the week, I’ll have Burt (Lauten) get that information to you.”

Three of the Steelers’ captains from last year — which were voted on by the team’s players — are still around: quarterback Aaron Rodgers, defensive tackle Cam Heyward and outside linebacker T.J. Watt. Safety Miles Killebrew, the special teams’ representative, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the offseason, rejoining former Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Smith.
