New security measures at Heinz Field include metal detectors for all fans

PITTSBURGH — If you're going to the Steelers game this Sunday, be prepared for new security measures.

The NFL is now requiring all football stadiums to screen fans with a metal detector.

“Some buildings jumped into it fully last year, but we didn’t. We did it on the last game as a test and this year it’s mandatory,” Executive Director of Stadium Management at Heinz Field Jimmy Sacco said. “At the gate you will be asked to stick your arms out and spread your legs. Staff will go up and down, across and down your arms. Turn around and the same process will go up and down.”

The handheld metal detectors will replace the pat-down procedure which has been used in the past.

“It’s to protect everyone, the fans, staff and players. Unfortunately there are things that have come about in the world today that we have to take protection against,” Sacco said. “If the staff sees something bulky in your pockets or purse, they will ask you to step to the side and they will pat you down.”

Fans are encouraged to arrive early at Heinz Field and to allow extra time for screening.

“We’re asking fans to come prepared. Don’t carry a lot of things in your pockets and keep moving quickly,” Sacco said.

The Steelers take on the Indianapolis Colts at 8 p.m. on Sunday. You can watch the game on Channel 11.
