Outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel reopens ahead of schedule

PITTSBURGH — Weekend work on the outbound lanes of the Fort Pitt Tunnel wrapped up early, allowing the tunnel to reopen to traffic ahead of its scheduled Monday morning reopening.

The closure began at 10 p.m. Friday so that tunnel ceiling removal work could be done.

On Sunday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that the work had been completed and that traffic was no longer restricted.

While the work was being done, a posted detour required westbound traffic to merge into a single lane exiting at the North Route 837/Route 51 West End (Exit 69C) ramp on the Fort Pitt Bridge. Traffic was backed up at times on Saturday leading up to the detour.
