PennDOT offers warnings to motorists as construction season begins

PITTSBURGH — Construction season has kicked off in the Pittsburgh area, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is warning drivers.

Officials said April 23 through April 27 is the Work Zone Safety Week in Pennsylvania. PennDOT officials said the goal is to keep construction workers safe while they’re on the job.

Some points PennDOT officials want motorists to remember when driving through an active work zone are:

- Use both lanes to the merge point and then take turns. This rule is often ignored and leads to heavier delays and fender benders.

- Pay attention to the posted speed limit signs and don’t tailgate other drivers.

- Make sure your headlights are on when entering a construction zone.

Failure to abide by the laws could lead to fines or even a license suspension.

There are currently 102 construction projects scheduled this year in Allegheny County.
