ALTOONA, Pa. — A person of interest in the deadly shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was questioned in Pennsylvania.
Police say the man, Luigi Mangione, 26, of Maryland, was stopped at an Altoona-area McDonald’s because of reports that he looked like the shooting suspect.
According to a criminal complaint, Mangione was found sitting in the McDonald’s with a laptop and a backpack. He provided officers with a fake ID from New Jersey.
Authorities later said a McDonald’s customer first recognized him and notified an employee.
The complaint said officers asked Mangione if he had been to New York recently and he got quiet and started shaking, the complaint said.
When the ID came back with no results, Mangione provided officers with his real name and date of birth. When asked why he lied about his name, he said, “I clearly shouldn’t have,” the complaint said.
Mangione was found with a 3D-printed gun similar to the one used in the shooting and a silencer. The New York Times reports that the man had a written manifesto that criticized health care companies for putting profits above care.
Mangione is a University of Pennsylvania graduate and most recently lived in Hawaii.
He has not been charged in Thompson’s death, but was arrested on unrelated weapons, forgery and other charges. He was ordered held without bail after brief court appearance.
The sources tell NBC New York that NYPD detectives are in the area to question Mangione and assist local investigators.
Thompson was killed Wednesday morning outside the New York Hilton Midtown. Police believe it was a targeted attack and the shooter acted alone.
