PITTSBURGH — The City of Pittsburgh kicked off Black History Month by celebrating the National Negro Opera Company.
It was the first black opera company, founded in 1941. City officials say the company broke racial barriers and gave African American performers a platform in a predominantly white industry.
“I think what’s most important is everyone you see of color onstage today, is bc of the work of the National Negro Opera Company here in Pittsburgh,” Jonnet Solomon said.
A non-profit is working on restoring the Historic National Opera House, which once hosted the National Negro Opera Company.
