Pittsburgh moves ahead with rental bike plan

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh City Council is moving ahead with a plan to put 500 rental bicycles on city streets.

The plan would provide short-term rentals, and users would pay with a credit card to unlock a bike from a station.

The program has received $2.2 million in grants and is seeking a corporate sponsor to help defray costs.

Consultants have told the city that they believe the system could become financially self-sufficient, and the initial focus is on neighborhoods where demand was projected to be high.
