‘Pittsburgh Opens’ events next week aim to support small businesses

PITTSBURGH — After more than two years living through pandemic times, City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County officials are working to make up for lost time and profits in new, innovative ways while supporting small businesses.

It starts next week with a block party style celebration Thursday, April 21, at 4:30 p.m. at the US Steel Plaza.

“We have to contribute to our city because this is where we live,” said Sarah Schweitzer of Shadyside.

City and county leaders are collaborating with the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, small businesses and the Pittsburgh Penguins for the series of welcome back events dubbed “Pittsburgh Opens.”

“We are seeing more office workers coming into the Golden Triangle than we’re seeing in the last two years. We think that’s reason to celebrate, to get out and support small businesses,” said Jeremy Waldrup, president and CEO of Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership.

The happy-hour style celebrations will offer food, fun and live music right as the workday ends.

“I think it’s important that Pittsburgh brings back all their events and stuff, ‘cause I mean that’s the main thing downtown’s known for — all the events,” said Nina Brewer of Carnegie.

Waldrup hopes Pittsburgh Opens re-energizes downtown and spurs interest in everything the Steel City has to offer.

Many small business owners and residents applaud the move — knowing it could be a second chance at success.

“Being a small business owner, it’s hard to keep up with the money, the people. Nobody wants to go anywhere, so everyone’s a hermit staying in, so we need to get these small businesses for Pittsburgh up and running as well,” said Brewer.

There are several more Pittsburgh Opens events planned over the next six months.
