The shooting happened at the Northern Pike Garden Apartments on Monroeville Boulevard about 3:15 a.m.
Residents, including John Baker, woke up to the gunfire.
"I was dead asleep at three o'clock in the morning. It was scary, simple as that," he said. "I heard gunfire. I heard two shots, then I hear a series of gunshots. Six in a row. I got up and immediately locked the door."
Channel 11's Lori Houy reported that Stefano was shot in a hallway of apartment building G, where the father of three lived with his mother.
"I heard a woman saying, 'I don't think he's breathing.' She kept repeating that over and over again," said Baker.
Stefano died at Forbes Regional Hospital.
Two people, including one juvenile, were taken to Allegheny County Police Headquarters. Police have not said if any arrests have been made.
Channel 11 News saw a forensic team at a nearby CVS Pharmacy Sunday morning, though it is unclear if their investigation is connected to the shooting.
