Police officer shot in Duquesne, authorities release name of suspected shooter

DUQUESNE, Pa. — A Duquesne police officer who was shot early Wednesday morning is in stable condition.

The officer was responding to the area of Catherine and Savey streets around 12:18 a.m. for a report of shots fired and was immediately met by gunfire, according to a report from Allegheny County police.

The officer returned fire, striking the suspect in the leg.

The officer was shot in the foot, according to the report.

Other officers responding took the suspect into custody. The officer and suspect were transported to area hospitals in stable condition.

The man accused of shooting the officer is Shyheim Cortez Berry, 28, of Duquesne.

Berry is facing charges of criminal attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, criminal trespassing and terroristic threats.

He is currently being held at a hospital and is guarded by police. He will be sent to the Allegheny County Jail after he is released from the hospital.

Channel 11′s Alyssa Raymond was on the scene and saw investigators photographing a bulletproof vest. An unmarked police car that was towed from the scene appeared to have bullet holes on the driver’s side.

Homicide detectives are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the County Police Tip Line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.

The Duquesne officer is the fifth officer shot in the line of duty in the Pittsburgh region since the start of 2023.

Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntire was shot and killed Jan. 2 during a manhunt that lasted several hours. Tarentum Officer Jordan Schrecengost was shot responding to the same incident. He is recovering from his injuries.

McKeesport Officer Sean Sluganski was shot and killed responding to a domestic call Feb. 6. Officer Charles Thomas was shot and injured responding to the same call. He spoke at Officer Sluganski’s funeral.
