Police believe fatal shooting in Wexford was accidental

WEXFORD, Pa. — Authorities have confirmed that a 64-year-old man died in what appears to be an accidental shooting Wednesday morning in Wexford.

Northern Regional Police Chief Bob Amann told Channel 11’s Damany Lewis that police believe the shooting in the 4100 block of State Gamelands Road in Marshall Township was accidental.

Amann said he believes the man was in the area getting ready for turkey season when he may have slipped, fell and discharged his shotgun.

“It appears it was very wet back there, which may have caused him to slip with the weapon. Or he had a mechanical problem with the shotgun,” Amann said.

The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, had one gunshot wound to the chest. Amann said there were no signs of foul play.

Another hunter performing target practice nearby found the man’s body.

“He saw him laying on the side of the road when he was leaving,” said Amann.

Hunters from the nearby shooting range were stunned to learn of the man's death.

Bob Sestili said he’s been hunting for 35 years, but he’s never heard of an accident like this before.

“Safety on your gun, always. Always have your safety on when you’re walking,” Sestili said.
