PITTSBURGH - A Pittsburgh warehouse with a macabre bit of movie history will be up for auction in April.
The building at 7502 Thomas Blvd., Point Breeze, was a location for the mystery thriller “The Silence of the Lambs,” starring Jodie Foster as a young FBI trainee and Anthony Hopkins as the brilliant and diabolical cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter. It filmed in the Pittsburgh region in 1990 and hit theaters in the next year.
The warehouse, which Your Self Storage occupies, will go to the highest bidder when it is auctioned starting at 1 p.m. April 24. Hanna Chartwell will handle the auction, its first in Pittsburgh.
In the movie, Foster arrives in the warehouse looking for clues in a series of murders and crawls under a door into a storage unit. The Pittsburgh Film Office confirmed the warehouse was part of the movie.
Bill Matthews, senior sales associate with Howard Hanna Commercial, which is marketing the property, said the original “Your Self Storage” sign that appeared in the movie is still inside the building. He said he doubts the Hollywood history will affect the sale price.
He said the sale will be an absolute auction, which means the four-story, 106,000-square-foot building will be sold without reserve and regardless of price. Bidding will begin at $100,000.
The storage business will vacate when a closing is held on the sale, Matthews said. People with items in storage are moving them, he said.
The building is owned by the Focer Revokable Living Trust, part of the estate of Henry Focer of Brentwood, who died in September and was in the self-storage business.
“We have been directed by the trust that owns the property to sell and close before Memorial Day, with proceeds going to the estate,” said Mike Berland, executive vice president with Hanna Chartwell.
Matthews said the property would be ideal for loft office and/or residential development. It is zoned as urban industrial. There is parking for 90 cars. Hanna acquired Chartwell Group of Cleveland in September.
