Parents fighting to change dangerous bus stop in South Park

SOUTH PARK, Pa. — Just days before the start of school, some parents in South Park are fighting to move their children’s bus stop, which they say is dangerous.

Tamela Bowden told Channel 11 News that she’s been trying to get her children’s bus stop at the bottom of High Street moved for the last seven years and said she won’t stop pushing for the change until something is done.

“We're just trying to get the stop moved,” she said.

Parents said about 40 children catch the bus at the stop, which they claim is unsafe because of a blind S-curve the children walk down. Speeding cars have also been an issue, according to parents.

"There's a trolley stop right there, so cars are commuting in the morning, and sometimes, they're going very quickly to try and catch the next train,” Bowden said.

Parents told Channel 11 that in May a car veered off the road and almost hit a group of students waiting for the bus.

"My kids are very, very nervous about walking down to that stop. They really don't want to do it,” parent Beth Rakip said.

South Park School District officials released the following statement to Channel 11:

"The safety of our students is the number one priority. The placement of a bus stop at High and Pleasant was recently reviewed by the South Park Township Police Department. The findings are in agreement with the district's decision."

School officials have requested that the police department station an officer at the stop on Monday for the first day of school.

Regardless, parents said they still want the stop moved up the hills to Woodlawn Avenue.

"South Park is a great place to live. We love our community. We love our schools," Bowden said. "It's just this one issue with transportation."
