Steelers fire Special Teams coach after Tomlin called return game ‘below the line'

PITTSBURGH — Four days after saying that his team’s return game was “below the line,” Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin fired his Special Teams Coordinator, Al Everest, and replaced him with special teams assistant Amos Jones.

The move was announced in an email Thursday, which included a statement from Tomlin.

“We are continually evaluating our coaching staff and support staff, and we have decided to go in a different direction with respect to the coaching of our special teams. I want to thank Al for his contributions and efforts, and I wish him well in the future,” Tomlin said.

Everest joined the Steelers in 2010 as the special teams coordinator.

The Steelers play their third preseason game Saturday night at Buffalo.
