Guilty but mentally ill is verdict in case of man accused of stabbing teen in Target

PITTSBURGH — A jury that saw surveillance video of a homeless man stabbing a 16-year-old girl and several others who subdued him at an East Liberty Target store reached a mixed verdict Thursday afternoon.

Channel 11's Pamela Osborne reported that 44-year-old Leon Walls was found guilty, but mentally ill.

Walls faced a total of 19 charges. He was found to be guilty but mentally ill on nine of those charges, including one count of attempted homicide.

The defense says Walls is mentally ill, was hearing voices and isn't legally responsible for the rampage on March 25, 2013.

Glen Meadows, the father of 16-year-old Allison Meadows, told Channel 11 that he is disappointed that some of the other charges didn't stick.

Allegheny County prosecutors played the surveillance video at trial Wednesday. The jury began deliberating after hearing closing arguments Thursday morning.

Glen Meadows said seeing the video was difficult for him and his family, but that it made them even more grateful to the bystanders who helped.

Police say Walls grabbed the girl by the hair and dragged her away from her family before stabbing her in the chest and arm.

Walls then used her as a shield as others tried to stop him, cutting several of them in the process. The girl has recovered.
