Surveillance video shows woman cashing stolen checks in Stowe Township

MOON, Pa.,None — Surveillance footage helped police identify a woman accused of cashing illegal checks in an identity theft attempt.

Police said Kimberly Schatzel, 51, is accused of stealing nearly $3,000 and the identity of a man in Stowe Township.

The victim told police he realized something was wrong when his bank account began to dwindle and several checks were made out to cash.

“In this video age, you’re going to get caught, there’s no question about it,” Moon Township Police Chief Leo McCarthy said. “The victim investigated a little further and saw someone’s name signed on the back of the checks. The first name was Kim and he remembered when he was staying at a friends’ house, he had a friend by the name of Kim.”

According to police, Schatzel, her boyfriend and the victim shared a house for a few months last year. Police said they believe that’s when Schatzel began forging and cashing the stolen checks.

“They had surveillance video of her cashing the checks,” McCarthy said. “We pulled up her driver’s license photo and they were absolutely identical. It’s not a tough case.”

Schatzel is accused of cashing 16 stolen checks, but has not been arrested yet.
