The project to repair, expand and reestablish the Tree of Life Synagogue from damage done by a gunman who shot and killed 11 people on Oct. 27, 2018, has a scheduled date before the Pittsburgh Zoning Board of Adjustments.

According to agenda materials, the Tree of Life Synagogue at 5898 Wilkins Ave. in Squirrel Hill will seek a special exception for expanding a religious assembly use and for a “minor reduction to setbacks” for the project.

The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 1, for a project that includes a partial demolition and renovation that incorporates a new addition to the 45,000-square-foot building. The Tree of Life Synagogue’s congregation unveiled the new design for the project in May, based on work by Daniel Libeskind, serving as the project’s lead architect, with Strip District-based Rothschild Doyno Collaborative serving as the local firm.
