New discount grocery store set to open on McKnight Road

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The grocery wars are about to heat up. Giant Eagle confirmed Wednesday it is bringing its discount grocery store chain Valu King to Pittsburgh.

The store will go into the old Roomful Express building in Ross Towne Center on McKnight Road in the North Hills. It will be right next door to a new Bottom Dollar discount grocery store that is currently under construction.

Asked why the company is putting a store directly next to the competition, Giant Eagle spokesman Dick Roberts said, “The time is right to bring that banner to Pittsburgh.”

Roberts went on to say that it is a good location, and there aren’t many other desirable locations on McKnight Road.

“I think that’s good. Hopefully they’ll hire some of the younger adults who are scrambling and looking for jobs,” Ross Township resident Jim Holko said.

Giant Eagle signed the lease last week. It plans to open the store sometime in the fall.

“We need a discount store with the economy and everything,” Reserve Township resident Mary Ann Hepp said.

Giant Eagle operates seven Valu King stores, four in northeast Ohio, two in Erie and one in Johnstown.

Valu King appeals to the budget-conscious shopper and the stores have fresh produce, a meat counter and a deli, Giant Eagle officials said.
