Voters struck down a proposed amendment that would’ve expanded financial benefits for Allegheny County Council members.

In Tuesday’s midterm elections, around 67% of Allegheny County voters said no to repealing Article III, Subsection 7(c) of the county’s Home Rule Charter.

County council members currently get a stipend for their service.

However, the home rule charter doesn’t allow funding for personal staff, district offices, health/life insurance, pensions or personal vehicles, which other elected officials get.

Supporters of the amendment say eliminating these restrictions would encourage more people to run for council.

The amendment would’ve only made such benefits possible, and did not establish where the funding would come from.
