Westmoreland County Community College unveils new 9/11 memorial art installation

Westmoreland County Community College unveiled a new student-created 9/11 memorial art installation at its Youngwood campus Wednesday.

The piece depicts a soldier, firefighter, police officer and American flag, all in metal.

It recognizes the heroes who served and responded to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

In all, six students lent their talent to create the piece, which adds to the college’s existing 9/11 memorial.

One of those students, Nevaeah Colins, said she had to learn how to work with metal and spent time learning about the 9/11 attacks.

“I said before, I was not born on 9/11. I was born in 2007,” Colins said. “So, I had to go into this completely blind. I already knew what basically everyone else knows, but I actually did a lot of research, and I learned a lot from this whole thing. And it was such an honor to be able to work on all this.”
