Woman returns home from work to find house on fire

CASTLE SHANNON, Pa. — Authorities are investigating after a woman returned to her Castle Shannon apartment early Tuesday morning and found it on fire.

Officials said the blaze was reported at a home on Canal Street just after 3 a.m.

"I unlocked my door and there was smoke everywhere," said Brittany Pavlik. "I couldn't see, so I called 911 right away."

Fire Chief Bill Reffner said his firefighters found fire in the walls of the ceiling.  He said it looks like the fire started behind the stove.

"We're not sure if it's electrical or the stove malfunctioned, but there is some fairly heavy damage behind the stove wall," he said.

"There has been stuff with the gas line.  They came and looked at it and said everything was OK, but apparently people smelled gas," said Pavlik.

Channel 11 left a message for the apartment owner to find out more about the gas inspection.

The Allegheny County fire marshal is investigating.
