WVU student killed in hit-and-run; Search for driver continues

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown police continue to investigate a fatal hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old West Virginia University student early Sunday morning.

WVU officials identified the deceased student as Joseph Dzuris, of Harper’s Ferry.

The incident was reported around 5 a.m. on Patterson Drive, police said. According to investigators, the vehicle was traveling east when it struck Dzuris. The driver then fled the scene.

“Somebody somewhere knows something. That’s the most important thing. Somebody knows something,” Morgantown Police Chief Ed Preston said. “They’re pulling and reviewing surveillance tape from businesses and from the area.”

West Virginia University officials issued the following statement upon learning of Dzuris’ death:

“We are deeply saddened by the news of this hit-and-run tragedy that occurred on Patteson Drive early Sunday morning. Joseph Dzuris, 22, of Harper’s Ferry, was a three-year Resident Assistant in Housing and currently completing a degree in civil engineering while working night shift in our residence hall.

“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Joseph’s family and many friends, and the countless students whose lives he touched so meaningfully. Counseling services will immediately be provided. WVU Student Affairs has been in touch with Joseph’s family to offer support and comfort. A bell-ringing service in his honor will be announced at an appropriate time."

Dzuris’ friends told Channel 11’s Brandon Hudson that he was a role model on campus.

“I’m still in disbelief over what happened. It kind of makes you put life into perspective,” Gregory Parker said. “He was a great friend and a great guy. I know a lot of people on our floor looked up to him. There is one kid who actually is an RA because of him.”

Parker, who had Dzuris as an RA, said he met with other friends to cope with the tragedy.

“We just remembered the good times we had with him and how we should not take anything for granted,” Parker said.

Anyone with information on this accident is asked to call the Morgantown Police Department at 304-284-7522.
