NORTH FAYETTE, Pa. — Residents of a North Fayette neighborhood were evacuated early Monday morning because of a SWAT situation that lasted several hours.
Authorities were called shortly before 2 a.m. to Hawthorne Circle, where an apartment in a luxury townhome development was surrounded after a man refused to come out.
Officials said the man, 24, was shooting bullets through his apartment window. When gas was fired into the apartment after several hours of negotiations, SWAT members entered and found the man hiding in a bedroom closet.
The man, who has not been identified, was taken into custody shortly after 8 a.m. Police said he will undergo a psychiatric evaluation and charges will be filed.
“He was brought out in handcuffs with no pants on,” neighbor Daniel Stevensky said. “I was thinking, what the heck did I sign up for? I am just here for college, not for all this craziness in the world.”
While several residents were told to stay in their homes, many others were evacuated to a nearby community center while the SWAT situation unfolded.
“The neighborhood is actually very nice -- a lot of children, never have any of these issues,” neighbor Dina Tomcik said.
Nobody was injured.
