Man sentenced in shooting of pregnant Duquesne teen in 2014

DUQUESNE, Pa. — A man was sentenced for no less than 22-and-a-half years in prison after being convicted of shooting a pregnant teen in the stomach and killing her unborn baby in 2014.

Eric Taylor was 15 years old when prosecutors say he shot DaRae Delgado, who was also 15-years-old, in the stomach. Delgado survived, but her unborn son, Darren, did not. He would have been born the following month.

Delgado’s mother, Deanna Weems, wrote a letter that prosecutors read Wednesday in court.

"DaRae will never get over the fact that her son was murdered before he got to take his first breath," the letter read.

Weems said the baby is what shielded and saved her daughter’s life.

Taylor’s attorney Chris Conrad said his client didn’t say anything in court because he still said he is innocent.

“My client - he can't show the remorse because he's not the one who did the shooting. He still steadfast to that,” Conrad said.

Taylor was sentenced to no less than 22-and-a-half years and up to 45 years in prison for homicide and attempted homicide.

The judge said the fact that Taylor has two armed robberies when he was 13 years old weighed into his decision on the sentence.
