The Associated Press has called the Ohio governor’s race for Democrat Amy Acton.
Acton served as Ohio’s health director during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The AP declared her the winner at 10:49 p.m. Tuesday.
She defeats Republican and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
Current Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, could not file for re-election due to term limits.
According to the AP, Acton would become Ohio’s first Democrat governor since 2006.
Leading up to Election Day, Acton was the target of a controversial political ad featuring her estranged mother by Ramaswamy’s campaign.
In September, a man was arrested after police say he entered a tent where Acton was speaking at the Canfield Fairgrounds and pushed his way toward her through the crowd.
