HOMESTEAD, Pa. — Newly released DNA tests prove that a man convicted in the 1987 rapes of several women in Homestead was the perpetrator, the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.
Dennis Foy was convicted in 1989 of raping four of six women who were also bound and robbed in their Homestead homes. He was sentenced to 100 to 200 years in prison.
In July of this year, Foy petitioned for new DNA tests in an attempt to prove his innocence. The results of the tests on a paper bag of evidence, which had recently been discovered in the Homestead police station, were released Wednesday, conclusively proving he committed the crimes.
Lawyers from the Innocence Project had hoped the new DNA evidence would help overturn Foy’s conviction. Allegheny County police and prosecutors contended that they had the right person in custody, but fully cooperated when a judge ordered that an independent lab conduct the new tests.
Despite the conclusive results of the tests, Foy still maintained his innocence Wednesday.
