New Fad Diet Includes Appetite Suppressant Found In Pregnant Women's Urine

PITTSBURGH,None — As warmer months approach, research shows that more people begin to diet in time to slim up for the summer.

One diet that is gaining popularity is called the HCG diet, which encourages dieters to eat no more than 500 calories a day and take an appetite suppressant found in the urine of pregnant women.

"There is no real evidence this works. There are a lot of potential side effects," said registered dietician Rebecca Scritchfield.

Side effects include irritability, dizziness, confusion and blacking out.

Another diet that has been popular for years is the master cleanse, a type of detox where dieters only drink a concoction of lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water. While this diet has been around for years, Scritchfield said that doesn't mean it's healthy.

"My biggest concern with that is you're not allowed to have any food whatsoever, so how could you possibly meet your nutrition needs?" Scritchfield said.

Experts said while it's likely dieters will lose weight while trying the latest fads, it's also likely they'll gain the weight back, plus some additional pounds.
