PITTSBURGH — One of the biggest kids' consignment sales in the area is open for shoppers this weekend and it's a great way to save some cash.
With the economy still working on a rebound, the research firm, "Shopper Trak," said 2013 will be a slower holiday shopping year than last. Since a lot of people turn to consignment sales to save money, Channel 11's Katherine Amenta went out to the "Just Between Friends" sale to find out how consigners make sure the items they are selling are safe.
"Just Between Friends" is one of the largest children's consignment sales in the region. But before a single item can make it into the vast super sale, it gets matched to the federal recall list.
“Everything goes through a quality inspection before it's dropped off,” shopper Shannon Lebak said.
Robie said during her pre-sale preps, if an item has been recalled, it gets turned away.
It's not just baby equipment. They're also checking all the clothing racks.
“A few years ago, they changed regulations on hooded sweatshirts. We can no longer sell anything with drawstrin,” said Robie.
One customer told us, for her, it's not just about saving a buck.
“It's good for the environment,” said Jennifer Bailey. “Not letting toys sit when kids don't want them anymore, so it's a win-win for everybody.”
Robie says to check your children's items at home, visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website.
The sale is all this weekend at the RMU Island Sports Center Golf Dome. For more information, visit jbfsale.com.
