'Penguins Pond' Open For Public Skating

PITTSBURGH,None — The "Penguins Pond at South Side Works" is now open for public skating.

The rink will operate through Jan. 8. Public skating will be available every day.

Both the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) will be playing games throughout the seven-week period of operation.

The Penguins operated an outdoor rink for 10 days at last year's NHL Winter Classic on the North Shore, and the facility was so popular the team decided to make it an annual winter fixture.

"In many ways, 'Penguins Pond at South Side Works' will be the lasting legacy of the Winter Classic -- and a focal point for kids and families to skate together outdoors during the holiday season," said Penguins President David Morehouse.

Public skating will be $7 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. Skate rental is $3.

Public skating will be go from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. on Nov. 18.

The outdoor community ice rink will be located at the intersection of 26th and Sidney streets in the South Side Works complex. In addition to the Penguins, the pond is a joint effort of Highmark, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, rink operator Magic Ice and the Soffer Organization which operates South Side Works.
