1 dog found dead, 4 others removed from ‘uninhabitable' home in Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Officials said a Youngstown home where a dog was found dead and four others were removed from deplorable conditions has been declared uninhabitable.

A housing code enforcement officer posted a warning on the house in the 700 block of Old Furnace Road Tuesday afternoon, WFMJ reported.

The four dogs found inside are now in the care of Animal Charity.

"They were a little dirty, but they were mostly just scared. They were pretty friendly, but right now we're letting them decompress a little bit more before we do a full evaluation," Animal Charity representative Shalyse Bolash told WFMJ.

One dog was found dead on the front porch of the house. Humane officers who removed the dogs told WFMJ that the conditions inside the house are among the worst they have ever seen.

"Rats infested in the attic. You couldn't see an inch of the floor. There was no much feces and trash on the floor. Just nothing should inhabit that house," humane agent Marc Noday told WFMJ.

The 73-year-old homeowner is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Authorities said his wife passed away about a year ago and he was living alone at the house, which reportedly was also flea infested and had no heat, according to WFMJ.

The Humane Society said the possibility of charges in the case is still pending.

"We're going to wait to see if we can speak to the owner. We're going to collect all of our evidence, our vet records and consult our prosecutor," Noday told WFMJ.

The health department said the house will be condemned for health reasons.
