Pittsburgh Man Gets Life After 1993 Victim Dies

PITTSBURGH,None — A Pittsburgh man will spend life in prison for the death of a woman who lived in a vegetative state for 14 years after she was beaten in 1993.

Shawn Sadik, 38, was sentenced Tuesday. He had served 17 years of a 15- to 30-year sentence for the beating of Mary Mitchell before he was convicted of first-degree murder in October.

Allegheny County Medical Examiner Karl Williams found Mitchell's death from pneumonia on Sept. 17, 2007, stemmed from long-term problems caused by her beating in July 1993.

Prosecutors said Sadik and another man, Stevenson Rose, who is serving 20 to 40 years in Mitchell's death, beat and stomped Mitchell after she became angry that the men didn't give her crack cocaine for having sex with them.

Rose was convicted of aggravated assault and other charges and sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison.
