There’s a strong chance Pittsburgh Steelers legend Troy Polamalu won’t be wearing Black & Gold next year, according to multiple media reports.
NBC's Pro Football Talk reported the Steelers would rather the future Hall of Famer retire so they aren't forced to cut him.
Polamalu, who turns 34 next month, is a $3.6 million salary cap hit in 2015.
Pro Football Talk cites Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, who says the Steelers don't want to go through an awkward situation of cutting a loyal veteran and fan favorite.
The Steelers don’t have to cut Polamalu, but it’s “90 percent he’s not going to be back,” according to Bouchette.
If you remember, the Steelers were in a similar situation with Hines Ward. The Super Bowl XL MVP wasn’t ready to call it a career right away, so he was cut.
After a few weeks of looking around, Ward announced his retirement.
Steelers fans do not want to see No. 43 wearing anything but a Pittsburgh jersey, but the franchise might feel it has no choice.
