Target 11 Investigates The New Technology Call Spoofing

PITTSBURGH,None — Target 11 investigator Rick Earle investigated the potential consequences in the new technology known as call spoofing.

Call spoofing disguises caller's voices and can even alter the caller-ID to make it look like the call is coming from someone else.

Rick Wallace, a computer expert from Cranberry, said a website charges a small fee and they make it look like the call is coming from another number.

"It's just hard to imagine what could happen," Wallace said. "There are so many bad things that could go wrong here."

Spoofing also works with text messaging.

Wallace showed Earle how texts appear to come from his phone number, but in reality are coming from call spoofing.

Spoofing sites said it's intended for people who don't want others to know they're calling.

Wallace said he investigated a disturbing case where an employee received a call from a man claiming to be his boss.

The employee reset the computer password only to find out later that the caller was a hacker who got into the database.

Spoofing companies said they keep all of the information confidential, but if you engage in any illegal activity, they will turn over the information to law enforcement authorities.
