PITTSBURGH — Traveling on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will get more expensive on Sunday.
A toll increase of 12 percent for cash-paying customers and 2 percent for EZ-Pass users will go into effect.
Officials said the spike in prices has happened six years in a row and is needed to meet funding obligations under Act 44.
Channel 11’s Trisha Pitman reported that officials hope to go cashless by 2018. According to the turnpike commission, more than 70 percent of drivers use EZ Pass.
For example, drivers traveling between Irwin and Pittsburgh who use cash will pay $1.60 – up from $1.40. EZ-Pass users will see a 2-cent increase, saving 56 cents for using the system.
For longer, regional trips such as travel between Breezewood and New Stanton, EZ-Pass fares will increase from $7.10 to $7.25. Cash-paying turnpike drivers will pay $10.20, up from $9.10.
Tolls will increase on all turnpike commission-operated roads. Tolls will not change on the Findlay Connector.
