27 Allegheny County bridges rated ‘poor’ as officials plan repairs, replacements

PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County officials said they plan to fix and/or replace 27 bridges that are all rated “poor” in the coming years.

The county maintains 305 bridges that are 8 feet or longer, and about 8% of them that are rated “poor.” Of the 27 in that category, seven are expected to be replaced or removed this year. Construction projects for 18 others are expected to be bid before 2024. The remaining two bridges are scheduled to be scoped to begin construction design within the next year.

A bridge is considered in poor condition if any of its components - deck, superstructure or substructure - receive a 4 or lower rating on a 1-9 scale. A poor rating does not necessarily mean that a bridge is unsafe to drive on.
