After impasse over Pittsburgh Columbus statue, judge to make decision over its future

PITTSBURGH — After an impasse was declared over the future of the Christopher Columbus statue in Pittsburgh’s Schenley Park, a judge is now going to mediate the dispute.

According to our partners at TribLive.com, Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge John McVay will decide what happens to the public artwork in the disagreement between the city of Pittsburgh and the Italian Sons and Daughters of America.

Last summer, a petition was presented to the city asking that the statue be removed due to Columbus’ mistreatment of Native Americans. The Pittsburgh Art Commission voted to remove it and Mayor Bill Peduto agreed with the decision.

The Italian Sons and Daughters of American then filed a lawsuit keeping the statue in place. It has since been wrapped to protect it from any further damage.
