Bill would put speed cameras along highway work zones

PITTSBURGH — A new bill could put cameras inside highway work zones to help keep construction workers safe.

The bill would allow cameras to monitor the speed of vehicles through construction zones and issue tickets to violators.

Gov. Tom Wolf is expected to sign a bill into law soon that will have an effect on how fast you drive in those work zones.

The Pennsylvania Senate voted 47-1 to pass the plan that allows state police to set up speed cameras in work zones.

The bill will apply to interstates, the Turnpike and other major highways.

A light detection camera will measure your speed, and anyone going more than 11 MPH over the limit would get a ticket in the mail.

A first offense would be a written warning, with subsequent fines up to $150.

"I guess that's fine that they're trying to protect the workers, right?" said Ruta Marfatia of Franklin Park.

There will be signage showing where the cameras will be located in work zones.

Funds raised from the tickets will go toward work zone safety initiatives, the state police and the motor license fund.

"I personally think that would be a good thing. Ya never know what are doing if they know what's happening. They will drive more safely," said Michael Nduwimana of Pittsburgh.

After the governor signs the bill, cameras could go in place about four months after that.
