PETROLIA, Pa. — Workers at a Butler County plant thought they had a few more months on the job, but they were suddenly laid off earlier this week.
Last month, Indspec in Petrolia announced it was closing at the end of July.
Doug Hillard was at work Thursday, on his 40th birthday, when halfway through the day, he said, he was told to go home and not come back.
“There’s 200 some families here. It really affects the area,” Hilliard said.

The chemical plant makes rubber products. It’s been a mainstay of the small Petrolia community since 1920.
The restaurant next door said the closure will have an impact on their business as well.
“It’s a shame for these guys. A lot of them come in here and eat,” said Linda Kelly of Centurion Restaurant.
Hilliard said workers will be paid until the end of May.
A skeleton crew will stay on until the plant is demolished in October.
