BUTLER — The Butler Area School District will be holding new summer programs to target learning loss in elementary and secondary students.
The goal is to help hundreds of kids catch up on lost learning.
“We feel its important for students to be able to have their best foot forward next year,” Julie Hopp, with the district, said.
There’s no question it’s been a difficult year for students. The pandemic caused several disruptions in education. Kids had to adapt to online learning on the fly but now many kids are falling behind.
Hopp said academics and recreation activities will both be part of the program, focusing “on more the social emotional aspect on their learning.”
But the program is limited and invitation only. The district has identified which kids would most benefit from additional learning.
“While we would love to invite everyone and give everyone the opportunity we just don’t have the capacity to do that,” she said.
The district plans to send out invitations to families soon. As for summer school, for the first time ever, the district is offering it for free.
The district has also partnered with the city of Butler and county to hold even more camps this summer. That information will soon be posted on the schools website.
