Health officials working to combat vaccine hesitancy

PITTSBURGH — With vaccine appointments continuing to go unfilled in and around the region, Gov. Tom Wolf and health officials are trying to find out the best way to combat vaccine hesitancy.

“I’m worried because we are going to have flares and surges again until more of the population is immunized,” said Dr. Amy Crawford-Faucher with Allegheny Health Network. “We’ve seen it mostly in the scheduling of our mass events which previously filled up within minutes of the appointments going live.”

Just this week, AHN held a first dose vaccination clinic where they were prepared to inoculate about 7,000 people. They ended up only giving out about 5,000 doses and said that is pretty typical of what’s been happening the last few weeks.

UPMC officials said vaccine demand varies between communities, but there has been a plateau in demand at mass vaccination sites.

One official told Channel 11 the next step will be getting the vaccine to smaller shops and smaller events in communities.
