Hundreds of Pennsylvania National Guard members return home after protecting U.S. Capitol

PITTSBURGH — Hundreds of National Guard members are back home in Pennsylvania, weeks after being deployed to protect the U.S. Capitol. State officials sent guard members to Washington following the deadly rioting that overtook the Capitol before Inauguration Day.

“It was a mission. You’re given a mission, you do the mission,” said Lt. Col. Albert Fogle with the Army National Guard.

Fogle and his troops were welcomed home with hugs and handshakes after spending three weeks in Washington.

For Sgt. Amanda McKlveen, it was her first time in the nation’s capital.

“Given the last orders we were given, we didn’t know what we were getting in to,” she said. “We were definitely a part of something historic.”

The troops won’t be home for long, however. Within the last few hours, the guard said several hundred additional soldiers will re-deploy to Washington next week. It’s not clear what their mission will be. However, the impeachment of former President Donald Trump is set to begin soon.
